Lasmid Wants Ghana To Stop Taking DJs For Granted

Ghanaian artiste Lasmid

Ghanaian artiste Lasmid has reignited the conversation about the place of DJs in the country’s music industry, saying their contribution to the growth of artistes and songs deserves far greater appreciation.

The artiste believes DJs have been instrumental in determining what audiences listen to and helping Ghanaian music reach people beyond its original audience.

Reflecting on his early years and the influence of DJs on his own musical journey, Lasmid said many of the professionals behind the decks have played a role that is often overlooked.

“Ghanaian DJs deserve their flowers. I grew up listening to DJs who made artists feel bigger, made songs travel further and gave people the soundtrack to their lives. A lot of what I am today was shaped by those moments. Sometimes I feel we’ve become too comfortable taking that contribution for granted. I’m not calling anyone out,” he wrote on X.

Lasmid’s comments highlight a broader shift in how music is promoted and consumed in Ghana.

With streaming platforms, social media personalities, influencers and digital content creators now playing a major role in determining which songs gain attention, the traditional influence of radio DJs and other music selectors is sometimes viewed differently.

However, Lasmid believes the changing nature of music promotion should not erase the contribution DJs have made to the industry over the years.

He wants stakeholders to take a closer look at the value DJs bring to Ghanaian music and the recognition attached to their work.

“I just think it’s time we had a real conversation about how much DJs mean to Ghanaian music and how much more they deserve,” Lasmid stressed.
