Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely recognised as Chairman Wontumi, has stepped forward to seek the New Patriotic Party’s top leadership role, announcing plans to contest for the National Chairmanship.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman made his intentions public in a statement dated February 4, 2026, signalling his ambition to lead the party at a time he believes calls for renewal and cohesion. He explained that his decision came after extensive engagement with senior party figures and younger members, adding that his goal is to reinforce the party’s internal strength and restore unity ahead of future political battles.
“Our party has faced challenges and learned hard lessons along the way. At this critical moment, the NPP demands leadership that is steady, principled, and committed to unity,” he stated.
Chairman Wontumi tagged his candidature as a duty rather than a personal pursuit, indicating that his focus is to rebuild trust within party ranks, energise the grassroots base and reposition the NPP for the 2028 general elections.
He emphasised the demanding nature of the period ahead, stressing that the party would require bold direction and firm decision-making to overcome its hurdles and remain competitive on the national stage.
“The road ahead will demand vision, courage, and unwavering determination. Leadership at this moment requires bravery — the courage to stand firm, make difficult decisions, and the willingness to lose all if necessary for the NPP,” the statement said.
Projecting himself as a leader closely connected to the party’s base, he noted his commitment to inclusiveness, promising to work alongside all members, from founding figures to emerging supporters, in building a stronger organisational structure.
Chairman Wontumi also struck a confident tone about the party’s preparedness for upcoming political contests, declaring, “We are ready. We are organized. We are built for the battle ahead.”
He wrapped up his declaration by urging party faithful to close ranks and work collectively toward rebuilding momentum, stating that the NPP would “rise again — together,” while offering prayers for the party, Ghana’s democratic growth and national progress.
Chairman Wontumi remains the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party and is expected to officially submit his nomination once the party opens nominations for the National Chairmanship race.
