Nyinahin SHS Assault Case Takes New Turn as Teacher Is Re-Arraigned, Granted GH₵80,000 Bail

Eric Apaflo Buernortey - Nyinahin SHS Teacher in Assault Case

A teacher accused of assaulting an 18-year-old student at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School has been re-arraigned before the Nyinahin District Court after prosecutors revived the case.

Eric Apaflo Buernortey, 39, who faces a charge of assault, pleaded not guilty when he appeared before the court on Friday.

The case returns to court weeks after it was initially withdrawn by police. Buernortey was first arraigned following the alleged incident on June 8, 2026, but the prosecution later discontinued the matter, leading to his discharge before fresh proceedings were initiated.

Presiding over the case, relieving judge Lord Delvin Essandoh granted the accused bail in the sum of GH₵80,000 with three sureties, all of whom must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, GNA reported.

As part of his bail conditions, Buernortey is required to report to the case investigator every two weeks on Mondays until further notice.

The court also warned the public against spreading false information about the ongoing case, stressing that any attempt to misrepresent proceedings would not be condoned.

“The public is hereby cautioned against any misinformation in respect of the matter, as any misinformation would not be tolerated,” the court said.

Presenting the facts, Chief Inspector Eric Owusu told the court that the complainant, Patricia Chibu, is an 18-year-old final-year student at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School, where the accused serves as a tutor. Buernortey also acts as caretaker of Adusei Hostel, located adjacent to the school.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred at about noon on June 8, 2026, when the teacher confronted the complainant and other male students occupying the hostel over what he described as misconduct.

During the confrontation, the prosecution said the complainant allegedly insulted and mocked the teacher, provoking him.

The prosecution alleged that Buernortey then attacked and assaulted the student.

The court further heard that the complainant subsequently called some residents from the town to the scene. The group allegedly attempted to lynch the teacher before a police patrol team intervened, rescued him and escorted both parties to the police station.

Police later issued the complainant with a medical report form for treatment, which was subsequently returned after being completed and endorsed by a medical officer.

Investigators detained the accused, conducted further enquiries into the alleged assault and obtained a caution statement from him as part of the investigation.
