Nollywood Star Alex Ekubo Dies at 40 After Cancer Battle

Alex Ekubo

Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo has died at the age of 40 following a prolonged battle with cancer.

According to reports, the award-winning screen star had been privately dealing with the illness for some time before news of his passing broke, sending waves of shock across social media and plunging sections of the Nigerian film industry into mourning.

Concerns about his wellbeing had been growing for months. Fans noticed his long absence from public appearances and his last active engagement on social media dated back to late 2024. That silence triggered widespread speculation online, alongside messages of hope from supporters who continued to pray for his recovery. While close associates had previously tried to calm fears, the latest reports now point to a severe health struggle behind the scenes.

Born Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke, he studied Law at the University of Calabar and also obtained a diploma in Mass Communication. His rise to fame began in 2010 when he finished as first runner-up in the Mr Nigeria Contest, a breakthrough that opened the door to a flourishing acting career spanning more than a decade.

He built a reputation in Nollywood for his versatility, often portraying charismatic and refined characters with ease. His performance in the 2012 film In the Cupboard earned him the “Best Actor in a Supporting Role” award at the Best of Nollywood Awards, further cementing his status as one of the industry’s standout talents. Beyond acting, he was also widely recognised for his elegance, humour, and strong screen presence.

Away from film, his personal life frequently drew public attention, especially his high-profile relationship with American-born model Fancy Acholonu. The pair were once considered one of the most talked-about celebrity couples in the entertainment space.

Their engagement in May 2021, which came with wedding plans tagged #FalexxForever set for November that year, was widely celebrated. However, the relationship ended abruptly when Acholonu called off the engagement just months later, citing her need to pursue personal truth. The split later resurfaced in public discourse between late 2022 and early 2023 after Acholonu made additional remarks about the nature of their relationship, including claims around emotional distance. Despite the controversy, many fans continued to hold onto hopes of reconciliation.

As news of his reported death spreads, tributes have begun pouring in from colleagues and admirers across the entertainment industry. Many describe him as warm, disciplined, and full of energy, with a presence that left a lasting mark on African cinema.
