Parliament Yet to Receive Authenticated Arrest Warrant for Ohene Kwame Frimpong

Legal counsel has now been secured for the independent Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, who is currently being held in detention in the Netherlands, while Parliament says it is still awaiting an authenticated arrest warrant from Dutch prosecutors.

The situation was outlined by the Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, during an interview on Channel One TV on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.

He explained that the MP reached out to him shortly after his arrest on Sunday morning, which immediately triggered consultations with parliamentary leadership.

According to him, the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, who was in transit at Heathrow Airport at the time, adjusted his travel route and continued to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to engage Dutch authorities directly on the matter.

Mr Dafeamekpor said Mr Ayariga spent about two to three hours in discussions with officials as efforts began to clarify the circumstances surrounding the detention.

“The Speaker himself has been brought in, the Clerk. So we have coordinated this matter very well,” he said, adding:

“Since then, we have brought in the Foreign Minister, brought in our Ambassador to The Hague, brought in the Attorney General because he has to deal with some legal issues in terms of travelling on a diplomatic passport,” Mr Dafeamekpor said.

He further confirmed that legal representation had been arranged for the MP. The lawyer, he noted, is of Ghanaian origin, qualified in the Netherlands, and currently practising there, though he declined to disclose the individual’s identity.

Parliament and the legal team, however, are still without key official documentation related to the arrest.

“The prosecutor that has been appointed in Amsterdam, dealing with the matter with the lawyer, is yet to give those necessary documents to the lawyer and for our consideration,” he said.

“So let us remain calm and not jeopardise the issues.”

Mr Dafeamekpor disclosed that the detention occurred on Sunday, May 10, 2026, when Kwame Ohene Frimpong arrived at Schiphol Airport aboard a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight from Accra.

He added that the MP, who was travelling on a diplomatic passport, was en route on a private visit to the United Kingdom, where his family resides, and was picked up while transiting through the Netherlands.

The use of a diplomatic passport has introduced additional legal and diplomatic considerations, with the Attorney General now reviewing the implications surrounding his status.

Although media reports have linked the detention to an alleged investigation involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Mr Dafeamekpor stressed that no official documentation confirming such claims has been submitted to Parliament or the legal team.

“We want to urge all the media houses not to be throwing in things that have not been confirmed,” he said.

“Even the one for his arrest, we are yet to have the authenticated copy. Let us remain calm and not jeopardise the issues. We are doing everything possible to see how best the matter can be resolved.”

Mr Frimpong, widely known as OK Frimpong, secured the Asante Akyem North seat in the 2024 general election as an independent candidate before later joining the Majority Caucus in Parliament.

Parliament confirmed his detention on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, through a statement signed by the Clerk to Parliament, Mr Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror. It indicated that the Speaker and parliamentary leadership were working with Ghana’s mission in The Hague to obtain further details.

Also weighing in on the matter, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and the New Patriotic Party’s spokesperson on constitutional and legal affairs, Dr Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, urged caution, noting that formal charges had not yet been established.

Mr Dafeamekpor maintained that the detained MP was in stable condition and had not been subjected to mistreatment while in custody.

As of Wednesday night, Kwame Ohene Frimpong remained in detention in the Netherlands, while Ghanaian authorities continued engagements with Dutch officials and legal representatives in The Hague.
