“I Was Beaten” – Ghanaian Evacuee Shares Painful South Africa Experience

Evacuee shows injuries after xenophobic attacks in South Africa, praising Ghana’s rescue mission for bringing him and others home safely.

A Ghanaian evacuee returning from South Africa has shared a distressing account of alleged xenophobic violence, describing physical abuse and harsh living conditions before his rescue.

He was among about 300 citizens flown back to Ghana and spoke to journalists shortly after arrival, showing visible injuries he said were sustained during the attacks.

He explained that many of those evacuated had been surviving under difficult circumstances, while others were reportedly detained or left without assistance before the government stepped in.

“God bless Ghanaian leaders for thinking about us and bringing us back,” he said.

“People who were in jail and those who were in great need and suffering have been brought back.”

The returnee said he personally endured beatings during the incidents and pointed to marks on his body during the interview as proof of what he went through.

“Personally, I suffered beatings. Look at my marks. It is God that brought me here,” he stated.

Even with the ordeal behind him, he stressed forgiveness and urged restraint, rejecting any idea of revenge.

“I have forgiven anyone who offended me. They [South Africa] should also forgive me. I don’t believe we should retaliate,” he added.

He also expressed gratitude to Ghanaian authorities for coordinating the evacuation and bringing citizens home safely.

“Our government thinks about us. We want peace, not pieces,” he said.

Government officials received the evacuees on arrival in Accra as part of a broader response to support citizens affected by the unrest in South Africa.

Authorities have indicated that the returnees will undergo medical checks, counselling, and reintegration support to help them resettle.
