Stonebwoy’s TGMA Success Driven by Investment – Ras Kuuku Asserts

Ras Kuuku

Reggae and dancehall musician Ras Kuuku has weighed in on why Stonebwoy continues to maintain a firm grip on the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) ‘Reggae/Dancehall’ category, pointing to financial strategy rather than a lack of competition from other acts.

The category has largely been defined by Stonebwoy’s long-standing dominance, stretching over a decade. Since its introduction 12 years ago, he has secured the award 10 times, with only two interruptions coming from Ras Kuuku himself in 2020 and Epixode in 2021.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Ras Kuuku suggested that the conversation should not be framed around effort or talent gaps among artistes, stressing instead that investment plays a decisive role in outcomes.

“Everybody is working hard. It’s not true that the other artistes are sleeping. Stonebwoy invests more money into the business than most of us. He understands the business side very well and puts a lot into promotion and marketing. The more money you invest, the bigger the visibility,” he said.

According to him, the dancehall scene in Ghana remains active and competitive, but financial backing often determines who stays ahead in the long run.

“When one person puts far more money into the craft, the results will also be different. I’m happy he’s investing in the industry because it helps the genre grow,” he said.

Ras Kuuku noted that while artistes such as Stonebwoy continue to push the genre forward, the scale of investment behind a project ultimately shapes its reach and award success.
