Ofori Amponsah has revealed that his journey to becoming one of Ghana’s prominent highlife musicians was marked by rejection from music producers who initially saw little commercial value in his work.
The highlife musician recalled travelling to Accra as a young aspiring musician in search of producers who would give him a chance, but many of those he approached were unconvinced that his songs could succeed.
Speaking in an interview with Kafui Dey, Ofori Amponsah said the repeated setbacks did not stop him from pursuing a career in music.
“I came to Accra searching for producers, but they did not believe my songs could work,” he said.
His determination, he explained, dates back to his days in secondary school, when he had already begun thinking seriously about turning his passion for music into a career.
Ofori Amponsah said he started seeking opportunities while in Form Four and became even more persistent the following year. After school, he would carry cassette recordings of his songs around, hoping to find a producer who would listen to his work and invest in his talent.
“I started around Form Four. Nobody was willing to help. I was in Form Five, and after school, I picked up my cassette and went around to search,” he recounted.
At the time, the lack of interest from producers could easily have ended his ambitions. Instead, the singer continued looking for opportunities, refusing to allow the opinions of industry players to determine the direction of his career.
His experience highlights the uncertainty many aspiring musicians face before gaining recognition, particularly when their work has yet to find an audience or attract the backing of established industry figures.
For Ofori Amponsah, however, the early rejection became part of a longer journey that eventually led to his breakthrough. He went on to establish himself as a major figure in Ghanaian highlife, recording several successful songs and earning a reputation as one of the genre’s notable voices.
Looking back, his story underscores the distance between an artist’s early struggles and the success that may eventually follow. What producers once considered unlikely to work ultimately became part of the foundation of a career that would earn Ofori Amponsah a lasting place in Ghana’s highlife music scene.
