Passengers travelling through the Accra International Airport can now keep their laptops, liquids and other permitted items in their cabin baggage during security screening following the installation of new advanced screening equipment at Terminals 2 and 3.
The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) announced in a public notice issued on July 11, 2026, that the upgraded system is designed to improve the security screening process while reducing the time passengers spend preparing their bags before boarding.
Under the new arrangement, travellers will no longer be required to remove laptops and other large electronic devices from their cabin baggage when passing through security checks.
Passengers will also be allowed to keep their shoes and belts on during screening, except in cases where additional checks are required following security profiling.
The new equipment also permits liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) to remain inside carry-on luggage during screening. However, the existing aviation security rule restricting liquids to a maximum of 100 millilitres per container remains unchanged.
The GACL said the newly installed system comes with an automatic tray return feature, which sends trays back to passengers after screening to make the repacking process faster and more convenient.
“The new system would be introduced in phases and would operate alongside the existing screening equipment during the transition period,” the GACL said.
The airport authority said the upgrade forms part of broader measures aimed at enhancing passenger experience, improving processing times and strengthening aviation security at Ghana’s main international gateway.
The latest development follows other security improvements introduced at the airport, including the rollout of an Advance Passenger Information and Passenger Name Record system in August 2025. The system allows security agencies to assess passenger information before arrival and departure.
What passengers need to know:
Laptops and electronic devices can remain in bags
Travellers no longer need to remove laptops and other large electronic devices from their cabin baggage during security screening.
Shoes and belts can remain on
Passengers may go through screening with their shoes and belts on unless security officers request additional checks.
Liquids, aerosols and gels can stay in cabin baggage
LAGs can remain inside carry-on bags during screening, although containers holding more than 100 millilitres are still not permitted under existing security regulations.
Faster repacking after screening
The automatic tray return system will help passengers retrieve trays quickly and repack their belongings more efficiently.
Transition will happen gradually
The airport will introduce the new screening system progressively while existing procedures and equipment continue to operate during the migration period.
