Gomoa Central Member of Parliament Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has defended his controversial exchange with media personality Ola Michael on live television, saying he has no regrets about his conduct and would respond in the same manner if faced with a similar situation.
The lawmaker, speaking in an interview on Neat FM, revisited the heated moment during the July 5, 2026 edition of United Showbiz, insisting that the programme was created to highlight issues affecting Ghana’s creative arts industry and not to shift attention to unrelated matters.
According to A-Plus, the discussion on the show was focused on concerns that some people were attempting to undermine the relevance of the entertainment sector and disrespect individuals contributing to its growth.
He argued that Ola Michael’s decision to introduce screenshots from a previous incident during the discussion distracted from the central issue being addressed on the programme.
“United Showbiz is a platform for showbiz, where stakeholders in the industry come together. If we are seated there discussing how someone is trying to downplay our importance and disrespect us, and the purpose of the platform is to defend the arts, then you want to rubbish all of that by saying, ‘Three months ago, I saw something, and I want to question you about it,’ you’re a fool,” A-Plus said.
The MP maintained that he was satisfied with his reaction during the exchange, stressing that he would not hesitate to take a similar stance if he encountered the same circumstances in the future.
“I am proud of what I did, and I will do it again at any opportunity I get,” he noted.
A-Plus said he accepts criticism and is prepared to admit mistakes when he is wrong, but added that he also believes in acknowledging his own actions when he considers them justified.
“If I do something wrong, I will admit that it wasn’t right. I’m human, and I will apologise. But if I do something right, I will praise myself,” he said.
He further revealed that the incident gave him a sense of fulfilment because he believed he had stood up for the creative arts community.
“In my life, I haven’t been as excited as I was on that Saturday when I appeared on United Showbiz. I was so excited that on my way home, I was playing music,” he noted.
The lawmaker also issued a warning to anyone he believes attempts to undermine Ghana’s entertainment industry, saying he would continue to defend people working within the sector.
“Any day someone tries to disrespect those of us in the industry or downplay the importance of the industry, I will come for that person,” he added.
Beyond the confrontation, A-Plus raised concerns about the lack of unity among players in Ghana’s creative arts space.
He compared the industry to other sectors where stakeholders often come together to push shared interests, arguing that internal divisions continue to limit the growth, structure and influence of the creative sector.
The clash between A-Plus and Ola Michael happened during the July 5, 2026 edition of United Showbiz while the panel discussed Ghana’s persistent flooding challenges.
The debate followed comments from a resident of Gomoa who suggested that, as the MP for the area, A-Plus should prioritise addressing drainage concerns in his constituency rather than focusing heavily on entertainment-related matters.
During the discussion, Ola Michael attempted to read reactions and comments linked to a statement A-Plus had posted on Facebook.
He wanted to establish whether the MP had insulted the resident for appearing to dismiss the importance of the creative industry and to examine public reactions to the matter.
However, A-Plus objected to the direction of the conversation, arguing that bringing up the previous issue diverted attention from the broader discussion about respect, recognition and support for Ghana’s creative arts industry.
