Ghanaian rapper Okyeame Kwame believes marriage can expose the parts of a person’s character that others may never dare to confront, making it both frightening and rewarding. Despite acknowledging the challenges that come with commitment, he says marrying his wife, Annica, is a decision he would gladly make again.

In an interview with Pulse, the award-winning musician described marriage as “scary” and “dangerous,” arguing that the fear some people have about settling down is understandable because of the personal truths that come to light in a relationship.

“I married at 34, and I would also be afraid of marriage. It’s a very terrible thing. It’s dangerous. It’s like a gift and a curse, you know. So when people are afraid, it’s all right for them to be afraid,” he said.

Okyeame Kwame sees marriage as more than companionship. He believes it challenges partners to confront their own behaviour, attitudes and shortcomings, often revealing truths that friends and others may be too uncomfortable to tell them.

“Marriage is that one mirror that you put in front of your face every day that tells you the truth about who you are that everybody else is afraid to tell you,” he explained.

He stated that the benefits of marriage depend partly on a person’s willingness to confront these revelations rather than allow pride or ego to stand in the way. By accepting what the relationship exposes and making the necessary changes, couples can use the experience to improve themselves.

Although he recognises the difficulties associated with marriage, the rapper’s personal experience has left him convinced that the rewards outweigh the challenges.

He credited Annica with playing an influential role in decisions concerning his business ventures and parenting, describing their relationship as one that has significantly shaped his life.

Okyeame Kwame also expressed the depth of his attachment to his wife, making it clear that his commitment to her extends beyond the conventional understanding of marriage as a bond that ends with death.

“I think that I made an amazing decision marrying my wife. If I go to heaven today and she doesn’t make it, I will leave the place. Wherever Annica is, it cannot be heaven. If I die now, I wake up, we are doing it again. So for us, it’s not till death do us part because we are together till all the universe,” the Rap Doctor further stated.
