High Court denies Nana Agradaa bail pending appeal, orders Circuit Court to submit trial documents

An attempt by the legal team of Evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, to secure her release from prison has hit a roadblock. The High Court in Amasaman has rejected her application for bail pending the outcome of her appeal.

Dr. Bernard Kofi Asamoah, a member of Agradaa’s legal team, confirmed the court’s decision in an interview with Citi News on Tuesday, July 15. He noted that while the request for bail was denied, the court issued instructions for further proceedings.

“We wanted bail pending appeal, and the court did not grant it. The court has given an order that the Circuit Court furnish the court with all the processes needed for the appeal. We will continue the appeal process,” Dr. Asamoah stated.

The ruling comes less than two weeks after Nana Agradaa was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Circuit Court on July 3. Presided over by Justice Evelyn Asamoah, the court found her guilty of defrauding by false pretence and engaging in charlatanic advertisement. The former traditional priestess turned evangelist was also handed a separate fine of 25 penalty units.

Agradaa’s legal team has been actively working to overturn the conviction. On July 7, lead counsel Richard Asare Baffour announced that they had submitted a formal petition to the High Court, seeking to appeal both the judgment and the custodial sentence. The lawyers argue that the trial was fundamentally flawed and that the verdict did not reflect the evidence presented.

While the denial of bail marks a legal setback, her legal representatives insist they are undeterred. They plan to press forward with the appeal through all necessary legal channels, maintaining their claim that the original trial was unjust.
