Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation Minister Samuel Nartey George has declared that from August 14, MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv, will incur a daily fine of GH₵10,000 until it hands over detailed bouquet pricing information demanded by the National Communications Authority (NCA).
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, August 15, Mr. George revealed the sanction follows the company’s continued refusal to comply with an earlier directive for a regulatory review of its subscription pricing models.
According to the minister, the NCA first sought the data on August 4, giving an initial deadline of August 5. That date was later extended to August 11 at MultiChoice’s request. However, the company still failed to meet the requirement.
“Per the Electronic Communications Act, failure to produce information requested by the Regulator attracts a GHS10,000 daily fine,” he wrote.
He added, “In good faith, I waived the fine from the 5th till yesterday when I met the management again and they still had not submitted the requested information.”
Mr. George said the fines would remain in place until MultiChoice complies, stressing that the information is crucial for the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation to make “better decisions” on pay-TV pricing in Ghana.
The minister underscored that his stance is rooted in protecting consumer interests and fairness in the market. “I remain committed to ensuring that the best deal is secured for the Ghanaian people,” he affirmed, ending his post with, “For God and Country.”
This penalty marks the latest flashpoint in a broader dispute between the government and MultiChoice over subscription fees. Authorities have been pushing for a 30 per cent reduction in rates, a proposal the company has dismissed as “not tenable.”
