Gyakie Reveals Nana Acheampong is Struggling to Process Daddy Lumba’s Death

Nana Acheampong and Daddy Lumba

Gyakie has opened up about how the death of Highlife legend Daddy Lumba has weighed heavily on her father, Nana Acheampong.

The two music greats share a history that goes back to their days in Germany during the late 1980s, when they joined forces to form the Lumba Brothers. Their first album, Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu, released in 1989, became a cornerstone of Highlife music and sealed their place in history.

In an interview with Andy Dosty, Gyakie said her father has found it difficult to come to terms with the loss, describing it as an emotional blow that the family has been helping him endure.

“Yes, we’ve been in conversations before, during, and after it happened. I went for the one week; he’s not in the country at the moment, so it was only right that even if he wouldn’t be there, I represent, so I ended up going.

“It really did take a toll on him; it took a huge… He’s still trying to process the whole thing. Because this is somebody that’s been from the beginning of their career and all that, so it’s really been heavy for him, but the family has been there and we’ve been supportive with him,” Gyakie stated.

Since Acheampong was away, Gyakie attended the one-week observation on his behalf at Independence Square on August 30, ensuring he was represented during the ceremony.
