He Said I Was Too Ugly for TV – Nana Aba Anamoah Recalls Her Day-One Firing

Nana Aba Anamoah

Long before she became one of Ghana’s most recognisable media figures, Nana Aba Anamoah faced a crushing setback that nearly ended her journey before it began.

During a discussion with Richie Mensah, Nana Aba Anamoah recalled how her very first appearance on television quickly turned into a career low point. The interview, which has spread widely online, captured her recounting the moment she lost her job the same day she started.

She explained that after completing her debut broadcast, she was summoned to the manager’s office, a meeting that abruptly cut short her time at the station.

According to her, the managing director dismissed her on the spot, criticising her appearance and making it clear she should not return.

“I went on TV for the first time at Metro TV, and my god, it was a disaster. It was suicidal. It was a disaster because my makeup was shambolic, my hair was disheveled, I had no idea what I was doing because it was live, and it was my first time, and there was no guide.

“I remember after I was finished, we were called to the MD’s office; he was a Lebanese man, and he was angry that we had desecrated his channel, and he said don’t come back again, this is your last time.’ Then he pointed at me because of what went on, on TV that day, and he said you’re so ugly. He said I was so ugly that he didn’t want me on his TV again,” Nana Aba recounted the unpleasant incident.

Her account has since stirred strong reactions across social media, with many pointing to the harsh treatment she endured at the outset of a career that would later redefine her as a leading voice in Ghana’s media space.
