A heavy downpour in Adenta Newsite on Thursday evening led to the collapse of a two-storey apartment building, triggering a rapid emergency response from the Ghana National Fire Service, which has since confirmed the completion of its search and rescue operation.
The incident occurred near the Da Yesu Ase Supermarket, where the structure gave way and left five people trapped under debris. A distress alert came in at 6:36 p.m., prompting the immediate dispatch of rescue teams from the Service’s National Headquarters, with additional support from personnel at the Legon and Abelemkpe Fire Stations.
Victims trapped in the rubble were identified as Margaret Kpeli, Fred Atagba, Solomon, Seyeram Dzigda, and David Dzigda, according to a report.
Rescue teams carried out a coordinated operation that led to the extraction of four survivors, Fred Atagba, Solomon, Seyeram Dzigda, and David Dzigda. All four sustained injuries and were taken to the 37 Military Hospital for medical care. A dog trapped in the debris was also rescued during the operation.
After several hours of sustained efforts, responders recovered Margaret Kpeli from the rubble in an unconscious state. She was later handed over to the Adenta District Police Service for preservation and further investigations.
The Ghana Police Service supported the operation alongside medical teams and firefighters from the National Headquarters, Legon Fire Station, and Abelemkpe Fire Station. Authorities praised residents who assisted with early rescue efforts before emergency crews arrived.
The GNFS concluded the operation at 10:54 p.m., noting that investigations into the cause of the structural collapse are still ongoing.
