Abronye DC Wins Court Approval to Travel Abroad for Studies Under Strict Bail Terms

Abronye DC

The High Court in Accra has allowed the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, to leave Ghana temporarily to begin postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom, marking a significant turn in his ongoing legal proceedings.

The decision was delivered by Justice Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Bassit after lawyers for Abronye DC successfully argued for the release of his passport, which had previously been lodged with the court as part of his bail conditions. The application was specifically aimed at enabling him to travel for a master’s programme.

Under the ruling, the court authorised his travel but imposed a strict deadline for his return. Abronye DC is expected to come back to Ghana no later than June 30, 2026, after which he must re-submit his passport to the court registry to remain in compliance with his bail terms.

He is reported to be pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, a development that formed the basis of the application for temporary travel clearance.

The latest ruling comes against the backdrop of earlier enforcement action by the court earlier this month, when Abronye DC was briefly ordered to be re-arrested and remanded for failing to meet an existing bail requirement. That condition had required him to deposit his passport with the court registry.

On June 4, 2026, proceedings took an unexpected direction when his legal team initially sought a waiver of the passport surrender requirement to facilitate travel arrangements. However, during the hearing, the court discovered that the passport had not been deposited as previously directed, prompting immediate judicial concern.

As a result, Justice El-Alawa Abdul-Bassit ordered that he be remanded.

The situation was later clarified. On June 8, the court registrar confirmed that the passport had in fact been deposited on June 5, bringing him back into compliance with the bail conditions at that time.

Following that confirmation, the court reinstated his bail arrangement but issued a firm warning. Any future breach of the conditions, the judge cautioned, would result in the revocation of bail.

Abronye DC’s legal troubles date back to his arrest on May 13, 2026, when he was remanded into the custody of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). This followed his arraignment before an Accra Circuit Court over alleged comments directed at a judge sitting at the Adenta Circuit Court.

His lawyers later moved to the High Court seeking bail pending the outcome of the case at the lower court. The application was granted, with the court setting bail at GH¢100,000 and requiring two justified sureties.

As part of the bail regime, the court imposed additional restrictions, including an order for him to surrender all travel documents to the court registry and a prohibition on leaving the jurisdiction without prior judicial approval. He was also instructed to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service every two weeks.

The charges against him include one count of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace, in violation of Section 207(1) of the Criminal Code, 1960 (Act 29).

Court filings allege that in April this year, Abronye DC made remarks about a judge sitting at the Adenta Circuit Court, describing the judge as “not a judge but rather a politician” and further stating that the judge had “covered your hair with a sack and claim you are a judge”.

He is also facing a separate charge of publication of false news under Section 208(1) of the Criminal Code, 1960 (Act 29).

Prosecutors contend that in a video circulated on social media, the 44-year-old referenced a “political judge”, a statement they argue was false and capable of provoking fear and panic while undermining public peace.

Abronye DC has entered a plea of not guilty to all charges as the case continues before the court.
