Gospel artiste Empress Gifty has shared her thoughts on the ongoing marital tensions between Bishop Daniel Obinim and his wife, Florence Obinim, using a light-hearted comparison to highlight how divorce is handled differently across social classes.
In a video circulating online on June 28, 2026, she questioned why some couples turn separation into a prolonged battle instead of resolving it calmly and privately.
“If you want to divorce, why torment? Saying you’re going to call her mother and all…,” she said.
Empress Gifty suggested that financially well-off couples often approach divorce in a more discreet and structured way, relying on legal processes rather than public disputes or extended family interventions.
“Poor people’s marriage is just not easy. When the rich are getting a divorce, they just agree, involve both lawyers to sign and they’re done. They can decide to share properties or not and they’re good,” she stated.
She drew a contrast with less privileged couples, who she said are more likely to move through several layers of mediation before a separation is finalised, involving pastors, counsellors, and family leaders in repeated attempts at reconciliation.
“For the poor people, they would keep begging and have meetings with the counsellor, pastor, family head and others, but it will still not work,” she averred.
Empress Gifty further referenced an example of a pastor she said handled his divorce in a composed manner after relocating to the United States, avoiding public drama.
“I know a pastor who was divorcing his wife; his father made him travel to the US and the divorce was so nice. They didn’t insult and embarrass each other. It’s just all about pen and paper; they sign and share their assets,” she recalled.
