As communities across the Greater Accra Region continue to recover from the widespread flooding caused by Monday’s torrential rains, actress and media personality Joselyn Dumas has urged Ghanaians to look beyond government intervention and embrace their own responsibility in tackling the country’s recurring flood crisis.
The devastating June 29, 2026, downpour inundated several parts of Accra, leaving roads submerged, damaging homes and businesses, disrupting transport, and affecting thousands of residents.
Responding to the aftermath in a social media post shared on June 30, 2026, Joselyn Dumas said although government support remains essential during such disasters, citizens must also acknowledge the role they play in preventing floods.
“Well, the government will do its best to help in this situation. But we, the citizens, have much more to do than the government. I hope we know that?” she wrote.
The actress stressed that lasting solutions to Ghana’s flooding problems will only come when both government and the public work toward the same objective. In her view, investments in infrastructure alone cannot deliver the desired results if people’s attitudes and daily actions fail to support those efforts.
“We all have a part to play, government and citizens alike. When the mindset of the people isn’t aligned, the infrastructure will be redundant. Progress happens when government and citizens pull in the same direction,” she stated.
Joselyn Dumas’ remarks add to the growing public conversation surrounding the causes of flooding in the capital, where concerns over poor sanitation, blocked drainage systems, indiscriminate waste disposal, and rapid urban development often resurface after heavy rainfall.
She also took a moment to express compassion for those whose lives and livelihoods were disrupted by the disaster, acknowledging the hardship many families and businesses now face.
“My heart goes out to all affected people, communities, and businesses that have suffered the ripple effect of this downpour,” she wrote.
The June 29 floods left several communities across the Greater Accra Region underwater, with floodwaters rendering major roads unusable and causing extensive damage to private property and commercial establishments. The disaster also interrupted business operations and daily commuting across affected areas.
Rescue operations have continued in the wake of the floods, with emergency personnel and government agencies assisting stranded residents, evaluating the scale of the destruction, and coordinating relief efforts for impacted communities.
