Veteran Ghanaian actor Oboy Siki has explained why he will not be attending Nana Ama McBrown’s upcoming movie premiere in Kumasi, making it clear that his decision is rooted in his personal views about the actress.
According to the actor, he does not particularly admire McBrown or her work and would not have shown her any support if not for his friendship with comedian Dr Likee.
Oboy Siki made the comments during a recent interview on Aluta FM, where he spoke candidly about his decision to support McBrown despite his reservations about her work.
“I’m supporting McBrown because of Dr Likee, but I can’t attend her movie premiere. I wouldn’t support McBrown if not for Dr Likee. Why should I support her? I don’t like anything she does,” he said.
The veteran actor maintained that personal preferences differ from one individual to another and argued that admiration for a public figure should not be treated as something everyone must share.
He said the fact that McBrown enjoys widespread popularity does not mean every person is expected to appreciate her work or personality.
“People will not understand me until I’m dead and gone. Not everyone likes her. Some people like her and what she does while some don’t,” he stated.
Oboy Siki also rejected the idea of allowing popular opinion to influence his personal choices. He said he prefers to form his own opinions rather than embrace something simply because it has become popular among others.
“I don’t follow what people do. I’m not supposed to like someone because everyone does. If I know you like something, I will never like the same thing. It doesn’t mean I have an issue with you,” he shared.
While he does not intend to attend McBrown’s premiere under the current circumstances, Oboy Siki explained that a personal invitation from the actress could change the situation.
For him, attending a major event without being invited would not be appropriate, particularly because he considers himself someone who should receive a formal invitation.
“If she had invited me to the premiere and I feel like I’m okay, I would go. I’m a special person so why will I attend without an invitation?” he questioned.
The actor also raised concerns about the possibility of arriving at the event with members of his team and facing difficulties at the entrance.
He suggested that being turned away after making the effort to attend would leave him in an uncomfortable position.
“If my team and I go and they sack us, what then will I be doing?” he asked.
Despite his position on McBrown, Oboy Siki spoke warmly about his relationship with Dr Likee, whose connection with him appears to have influenced his willingness to support the actress.
He disclosed that Dr Likee had previously invited him to participate in his planned London show and had given him advance notice about the trip.
According to the actor, the comedian wanted him to prepare early because they were expected to travel together.
Oboy Siki, however, said he eventually turned down the invitation because he does not travel outside Ghana.
“When Dr Likee wanted to organise his London show, he informed me last year. He asked me to get ready since we would be going together. I told him I had to decline the invitation because I don’t travel abroad,” the veteran Kumawood actor recalled.
