Joint 77 has opened up about a painful chapter in his relationship with dancehall artiste Shatta Wale, recalling how he was left in the dark about a major music project involving Beyoncé.
The former SM Militant member said Shatta Wale travelled for the video shoot without informing him or other members of the crew, despite the close bond they shared at the time.
Speaking in an interview on Max TV, Joint 77 recalled that he was with Shatta Wale on the day the artiste left Ghana. He said they even shared a meal before Shatta Wale departed, but he was not told that the trip was connected to a collaboration with the American superstar.
Joint 77 said he only learnt about the purpose of the trip after Shatta Wale had travelled and encountered difficulties, prompting the dancehall artiste to contact him.
“I was with him like the other guys were in there when he was going to shoot a video with Beyoncé. I was eating with him like this at the same table. He left that evening without telling anybody anything.
“Nobody in the crew knew because he thought we were wizards and would want to spoil his work. He went there alone to face the consequences before he called me, telling me a whole lot,” he said.
For Joint 77, the incident was not simply about being excluded from a music video. He said it made him question whether the trust and loyalty he had invested in his relationship with Shatta Wale were being reciprocated.
He also pointed to what he described as a broader pattern in which Shatta Wale would perform songs created with the Militant group without involving them in performances.
According to him, the situation became particularly frustrating because the group had contributed their verses to several of the songs, yet they were sometimes left unaware when Shatta Wale was scheduled to perform them.
“I moved because the way I held Shatta Wale, he wasn’t able to help us. Even travelling alone with the Militant to perform was a problem for him. He goes alone to perform ‘Taking Over’. He performed all of our songs, our verses. When he’s going, sometimes he will not even tell you,” Joint 77 further stated.
