Kwabena Kwabena Reveals the Heartbreak Behind His Song “Mene Woa”

Long before fame and chart success, a heartbreak shaped one of Kwabena Kwabena’s most beloved love songs.

The Ghanaian singer and songwriter, born George Kwabena Adu, has revealed that his hit track “Mene Woa” was written straight from a painful chapter of his own life. In an exclusive conversation with Doreen Avio and Kwame Dadzie, the multiple award-winning musician was asked which of his love songs came purely from real emotion rather than imagination. His answer pointed directly to that record.

“That would be when I composed Mene Woa,” he said.

Kwabena Kwabena explained that the song emerged at a time when he felt completely helpless in love. According to him, he was deeply attached to a woman he cared about, only to watch another man enter the picture and ultimately win her over.

“Because around that time, charley, I was helpless. I was in love and somebody was taking my chick, and the person succeeded too,” he revealed.

Reflecting on that experience, the singer noted that his lack of popularity at the time did not influence the outcome, adding that even success would not have changed what happened.

“Even if I was popular, nothing would have changed. Life happens sometimes,” he added.

The conversation later shifted from his past heartbreak to broader thoughts on love. Asked what guidance he would offer young people thinking about falling in love, Kwabena Kwabena dismissed the idea that love is a calculated choice.

“You don’t decide to fall in love; you just fall. It’s not a decision. I think it’s about feeling. It’s about that individual who gives you something extraordinary or something special,” he said.

On the long-debated notion that love is blind, the musician said he strongly agrees, stressing that genuine love requires tolerance and understanding of human flaws.

“Yes, of course, love is blind. Because if you say you’re going to open your eyes to everything, you’ll keep finding faults in the person. The person is human and cannot be perfect,” he explained.

He went on to compare romantic love to God’s love for humanity, describing both as rooted in forgiveness and acceptance.

“Like God, His love for us is blind. Because if He doesn’t blind His eyes from our deeds, He would find it difficult to love us,” he said.

Kwabena Kwabena concluded by emphasizing that unconditional love is possible, but only for those willing to learn from God, whom he described as the ultimate example of loving without conditions.
