Sonnie Badu Urges Quick Call on Kwesi Appiah After Otto Addo Sacking

Pressure has mounted around the Black Stars after back-to-back friendly defeats, and gospel artiste Sonnie Badu has weighed in on what went wrong and what should come next.

In the aftermath of Ghana’s 2:1 loss to Germany on March 30, 2026, Badu shared his assessment of Otto Addo, suggesting the former head coach showed glimpses of promise but ultimately struggled with the demands of managing the senior national team.

He argued that Addo’s strengths might be better utilised at youth level, where development takes priority over immediate results.

With the coaching seat now vacant, Badu turned his attention to the urgent task ahead, questioning who could step in quickly enough to steady the team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

He pointed to Kwesi Appiah, currently in charge of Sudan, as the most practical option. In his view, Appiah’s deep knowledge of the squad puts him ahead of any foreign candidate who would require time to adapt.

“After last night’s match, I gained some hope in Otto, but I think the senior national team was too big a responsibility for him. Maybe he’d be a better fit for one of the junior national teams. Now, the question is, who can take over in such a short time?

“I think Kwesi Appiah would be the perfect choice. He knows all the players, has tons of experience, and can lead the team effectively. A foreign coach would need time, which we don’t have right now. We can’t risk having them lose and then say they didn’t have enough time with the players. Let’s get Kwesi Appiah, even if it’s just for the World Cup,” he wrote.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed Addo’s dismissal on March 31, 2026, bringing his second stint to an abrupt end.

Otto Addo was sacked after Ghana’s defeats to Austria and Germany in their pre-World Cup friendlies this March.
