Florence Obinim is challenging the long-standing reservations some gospel circles hold about collaborations with secular musicians, making clear she does not subscribe to that line of thinking.
Speaking in a recent interview with JoyPrime, she said she has not actively considered a crossover collaboration, but pointed to dancehall artiste Shatta Wale as the one name she would be open to if the opportunity ever came.
“I haven’t planned for that, and it’s not something on my radar, but if I had to choose one person, I would go with Shatta Wale. If given the chance, I would love to collaborate with him,” she said.
She went further to explain that her admiration for Shatta Wale is rooted less in his music and more in how he relates with people around him, particularly his fans.
“I admire Shatta Wale for how he encourages his fans to pray and for his generosity toward the needy. Those qualities have made me like him from his early days,” she said.
Her remarks come amid ongoing debate within gospel music circles about whether working with secular artistes conflicts with the spiritual mission of gospel ministry. Florence, however, argued that personal responsibility and individual judgment matter most in such discussions.
“I’m very open to working with him if he reaches out, because at the end of the day, we’re all human. No one has the right to judge anyone; on judgment day, he will be judged for his actions, and I will be judged for mine,” Florence Obinim further stated.
