Man Accused of Stealing Police Armoured Vehicle Pleads for Recruitment in Court Drama

A 26-year-old suspect is in custody after allegedly stealing a Ghana Police armoured vehicle at Nkawie Market and being tracked to Mim.

Proceedings at the Kwadaso Circuit Court in Kumasi took an unexpected twist on Friday afternoon when a young man accused of stealing a police armoured vehicle shocked the courtroom with an unusual request for recruitment into the Ghana Police Service.

The accused, Ebenezer Frimpong, is said to have gone down on his knees in open court as his charges were read for the first time, pleading with the judge to show him mercy and also help him secure enlistment into the police service. His emotional appeal momentarily shifted attention away from the serious nature of the case.

His Honour Jephtha Appau, the presiding judge, acknowledged the plea during proceedings.

Frimpong, 26, an unemployed resident of Antwi Agyei Nkwanta in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region, was picked up on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, following a joint operation by officers from the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) and the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit.

Police Prosecutor ASP Albert Asagre, presenting the facts to the court, noted that the accused is also known to reside in Antwi Agyeikrom within the same district.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on April 14, 2026, when General Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi, who was driving an armoured police vehicle with registration number GP 1131, was transporting it to a workshop for routine servicing.

On the way, the officer reportedly experienced a stomach discomfort and stopped the vehicle near the Nkawie market to get medication from a nearby pharmacy.

It was at that point, the court heard, that he noticed the vehicle had been driven off in the direction of Abuakwa–Kumasi.

An alert was quickly raised, triggering a coordinated response involving MTTD motor riders and SWAT personnel, who eventually arrested the suspect in a high-paced operation at Mim, near Abuakwa.

In court, Frimpong maintained his appeal, repeatedly asking the judge to help him gain entry into the Ghana Police Service.

The prosecution, meanwhile, urged the court to remand him into police custody to support ongoing investigations.

However, in a move that surprised prosecutors, His Honour Jephtha Appau ordered that the accused be remanded into prison custody “for his own safety”.

The case has been adjourned, with Frimpong expected to reappear before the court on May 4, 2026.
