“My Mum Really Made Me Perform at Home Against My Will” – Gyakie Reveals

Ghanaian singer Gyakie has reflected on how her path into music began in a way she never expected, shaped more by her upbringing than a deliberate career choice.

In an interview on 3FM on May 4, 2026, she explained that although she was constantly surrounded by music as a child, she did not picture herself turning it into a profession.

She recalled that her mother played a key, though unintended, role in building her confidence, often insisting she performed whenever guests visited the house.

“I never thought I was going to do this as a profession growing up. My mum really made me perform at home against my will so many times. If she has friends over, she would call me to come and sing. I would pick a bottle or body lotion as a mic and perform in front of them. That used to annoy me a little bit, but she knew what she saw at that time,” she recounted.

According to her, music was already a normal part of her home life, especially because of her father’s involvement in the industry. She grew up watching rehearsals, studio sessions, and visiting artistes, which gradually shaped her awareness of the craft.

“Because we grew up around music, we all love music. Seeing my dad rehearse at home live, at the studio, seeing artistes coming in and out at the house, I was very young at that time, but I could know this was music going on,” she stated.

Even with that exposure, Gyakie said she still did not initially consider music as a career direction. She only began to recognise her own interest much later, particularly through school activities.

She noted that her role as entertainment prefect in secondary school kept her closely connected to performance and organising creative activities, though she still treated it casually at the time.

“I think I fell in love with it from there, but I didn’t think I was going to make it a profession. I was the entertainment prefect in secondary school, so it’s like I was really involved in entertainment. I just didn’t pay attention to it until I dropped my first song,” she said.

What finally shifted her mindset, she explained, was the response she received after releasing her debut track. The feedback from listeners made her realise her voice was connecting with people in a meaningful way.

“The kind of reception I was getting from people, I had to pay attention to what they were saying. The common thing was that my voice is very unique, the song is nice and I felt they were drawing my attention to something. It became serious and I’m here now, making it a business,” Gyakie stated.
