“I Was Told I Wouldn’t Hit” – Wendy Shay Recalls Harsh Early Career Rejection

Wendy Shay

Wendy Shay has opened up about the skepticism she faced from within Ghana’s music industry, revealing that her rise to fame was not widely expected by some influential figures.

In an interview with Kafui Dey, the Ghanaian singer reflected on the early days of her career, saying she was met with doubt and discouragement even as she remained confident in her path.

She explained that certain industry gatekeepers went as far as urging her manager, Bullet, to reconsider working with her, convinced she would not break through in the music space.

“I’m always grateful to Bullet for being that person who understood everyone’s journey. He never made me feel less of myself and he actually saw the bigger picture. Even though people told him he should forget me,” she said.

Wendy Shay added that one well-known figure in the industry did not hold back their opinion, telling her directly that she would fail.

“Big industry gatekeepers told him that and I was there. A big person in the industry said it to my face that it’s not going to work for me. He said I wouldn’t hit right in front of me,” she disclosed.

Rather than being discouraged, she said she held on firmly to her belief in her talent and encouraged her manager to trust her vision as well.

“I told Bullet not to listen to him because I believed I would hit. Bullet said that he’s rather listening to what God was saying and I’m really grateful for that,” she stated.

She also recalled that after her breakthrough success, the same critic attempted to reshape the narrative around her achievements.

“When I became a hit, I remember vividly that I was in a car going to the studio with Bullet and the person called again and said I didn’t hit because of me, but rather Bullet. Since he said I wouldn’t hit and I have, he wants to downplay my hard work and credit someone just so he would feel better,” Wendy Shay further stated.
