Preparations are underway for the final funeral rites of celebrated gospel musician Yaw Sarpong, with family and loved ones set to bid him farewell this weekend in Kumasi.
The late founder of the Asomafo Band will be laid to rest on Saturday, May 9, at the Asuofua Town Park following a series of funeral activities scheduled over three days.
A wake-keeping ceremony is expected to take place on Friday, May 8, while the lying-in-state will be held on Saturday morning at the same venue before the burial service begins.
Family members have announced that mourners attending Saturday’s funeral are expected to wear red and black, while white and black have been chosen for the thanksgiving service on Sunday, May 10, at Sokoban-Ampayoo.
Yaw Sarpong is remembered as one of Ghana’s most influential gospel musicians, whose career spanned close to five decades. Through his ministry and music, he became a household name with popular songs including Wo Haw Ne Sen, Awurade Kasa and Tie Obiaa.
His unique style and spiritually driven songs resonated with audiences across different generations and Christian denominations, helping shape and expand the gospel music scene in Ghana through his work with the Asomafo Band.
Before his demise, his impact on the music industry was recognised when he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
