Three people, including 19-year-old senior high school graduate Florence Naa Kwarley, have died in a suspected generator fume incident at Mahean-Ablekuma in Accra.
The victims were found lifeless in a room where they had spent the night, triggering renewed concerns about the dangers of operating generators in poorly ventilated areas.
One of the deceased has been identified as Jonas Ofosu Yeboah, a carpenter and owner of the room where the tragedy occurred.
According to reports, a power outage on the night of the incident forced Mr Ofosu Yeboah to place a generator in a locked corridor while the three occupants slept inside the room.
The bodies were discovered on the morning of Wednesday, May 6. Witnesses said the victims’ bodies had hardened by the time they were found, indicating they may have died hours earlier.
Speaking to AdomNews reporter Ohene Amponsah, Bernice Ofosu, sister of the late carpenter, described the incident as devastating.
“It is heartbreaking. My brother was always careful, but that night he placed the generator in the corridor to deal with the power outage. We never imagined it would end like this,” she said.
Police at the Amasaman Divisional Command have confirmed that investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths.
