“I Left When the Applause Was Loud” – MzGee on United Showbiz Exit

MzGee

Ghanaian media personality MzGee has reflected on her exit from United Showbiz, insisting she walked away without any second thoughts, even at a point when she was still enjoying strong viewer appreciation.

In an interview with Nana Romeo on Okay FM, she said her guiding principle has always been to step aside before public admiration fades.

“I get a lot of feedback that makes me satisfied and I feel like at least I did something there and that’s okay. I have a policy which says ‘leave when the applause is loud,” she said.

MzGee stressed that she does not feel any emotional pull toward the programme, adding that she left with a sense of completion rather than loss.

“I don’t miss hosting United Showbiz, but I’m glad the applause was loud when I was exiting,” she stated.

She explained that after years in entertainment journalism, she now feels it is time to pursue fresh challenges beyond the space she has long operated in.

Although she still gets calls to return to hosting entertainment shows, MzGee said she often finds herself questioning what new ground remains for her to cover.

“I don’t miss anything showbiz, sincerely, because I’ve seen and done it all. Now I’m looking for a new challenge for myself. I get people calling me to come and do showbiz, but I kept asking at this point, who haven’t I interviewed before? I’ve taken all the accolades, so there’s nothing to do again,” she shared.

She also responded to long-standing criticisms from some viewers who described her interviewing style as overly firm with guests.

“From the feedback I got, some people said I was too tough with them. If you don’t want accountability, I don’t play with you,” she said.

MzGee went further to address what she sees as inconsistency within the entertainment industry, where similar actions by different presenters are judged differently.

“In our spaces here, people don’t want the truth. You could ask a question and you would be criticized, but another person will ask the same question and they will be praised. The hypocrisy is just too much,” she noted.

Looking back on her time on the show, she acknowledged stepping into a role previously held by a widely admired figure and the pressure that came with it.

She said she was aware of the strong attachment fans had to the former host, and that some of the backlash she received was tied to that transition.

“I don’t think anyone can match the scale I brought on board. I was filling the shoes of a superstar. I have never done movies before and even if I have, I’ve never been popular through movies. I’ve sat down to enjoy the person’s movies and I was privileged to fill her seat,” she said.

“Even if that space is not her strength, she had a strength that she was bringing on board, which is the fact of the matter. Some people have idolized her and they feel I’m the reason she stopped hosting the show,” MzGee further stated.
