Ghana Welcomes First Evacuees From South Africa After Xenophobic Attacks

First group of Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa arrive in Accra as government rolls out support package for returnees.

The first group of Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa has landed in Ghana, arriving at about 3:00 pm on Wednesday, May 27 at Accra International Airport.

Their return comes after government assurances that any Ghanaian in South Africa who wished to come home would be assisted, following reports of xenophobic attacks in parts of the country. The evacuees in this initial batch number 300.

Ahead of the arrivals, authorities had outlined a support framework for those being brought back. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a public notice, stated that arrangements were in place to ensure safe return and smooth reintegration for affected citizens.

According to the statement, all evacuees will be enrolled in a package of assistance measures intended to help them re-establish themselves in Ghana.

As part of the immediate relief response, returnees are expected to receive a “Welcome Home Financial Package” from the government.

They will also be given transport support to help them reach their respective destinations after landing in Ghana.

Beyond the initial assistance, the government has also indicated plans for a reintegration allowance aimed at helping returnees rebuild their livelihoods after leaving South Africa under distressing conditions.

To address the emotional toll of the situation, the Ministry added that free psychosocial support services will be made available to those affected.

In addition, evacuees will be captured in a dedicated database designed to link them with employment opportunities and startup support programmes.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the intervention as part of its broader duty to safeguard Ghanaians abroad and support them during emergencies.

“We value and cherish all our citizens,” the statement said.
