Kwaw Kese Blames Accra Floods on Poor Drainage, Urges Govt to Stop Demolitions

Ghanaian rapper Kwaw Kese

Hiplife veteran Kwaw Kese has added his voice to the ongoing debate over Accra’s repeated flooding, arguing that the real issue goes beyond the demolition of homes.

In a post shared on X, he attributed the capital’s flooding pattern to deeper structural challenges, stressing that affected residents are not the root cause of the crisis. He described Accra’s geography and weak drainage network as the main drivers of the situation.

“Accra is surrounded by mountains and faced by the sea. When it rains, the water from the mountains has to flow to the sea, but due to the lack of proper drainage systems, the water can’t flow into the sea. So what happens? FLOOD,” he wrote.

Rather than displacing residents, Kwaw Kese urged authorities to focus on long term infrastructure fixes such as proper drainage construction and maintenance of waterways that can effectively channel runoff into the sea.

“Breaking people’s houses and homes won’t solve anything. Consider building drainage systems, dredging our gutters and waterways, and connecting them to the sea,” he stated.

He further cautioned that without decisive intervention, the same pattern would continue to repeat itself year after year, with similar destruction and public distress resurfacing.

“Next year by this time, we will be seeing the same videos circulating and hearing the same cries, and innocent people’s homes will go down, and we would be facing the same problems,” Kwaw Kese stated.
