Stephen Appiah Urges Black Stars to Rise for 2026 World Cup Glory

With Ghana preparing for their fifth World Cup appearance, former captain Stephen Appiah has issued a stirring call to the Black Stars, urging the squad to treat their qualification for the 2026 tournament as a rare privilege and a defining moment in their careers.

Appiah, who led Ghana national football team during their historic debut at the 2006 World Cup, emphasized that the chance to compete on football’s biggest stage should be handled with seriousness and pride as the team prepares for 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Reflecting on his own experience, he reminded the current generation that opportunities at this level are not guaranteed to last and must be fully maximised.

“It is their time and the right moment. The moment has come and they should take it. They shouldn’t play with it because we have seen players who had such opportunities and now they are paying for whatever happened,” Appiah said.

He also pointed to how the game has evolved since his playing days, noting that today’s players benefit from far greater visibility and global attention.

“In 2006 there was no social media, but now there is. They have to take advantage of every chance they get,” he added.

Beyond performance on the pitch, Appiah stressed the symbolic weight of the national shirt, saying the players carry expectations that extend beyond Ghana alone.

“They have to know that they are playing for the African continent. Wearing that shirt, they should know how important it is and they should fight for everything to achieve something,” he stated.
