Filmmaker and actor Kwadwo Nkansah (Lilwin) has opened up on why he did not show up at the 15th edition of the Ghana Movie Awards, offering a mix of travel trouble and personal concerns as his explanation.
According to him, the decision to stay away was not accidental. He stressed that he had already made up his mind not to fully go through with the trip after sensing that things could have escalated into a confrontation if he had attended.
He recounted that he initially set out with plans to be at the ceremony but was disrupted by heavy rainfall on Sunday, June 7, 2026. The weather conditions, he said, forced him to miss his scheduled flight from Kumasi to Accra, pushing him to switch to road travel instead.
The journey, however, did not end in Accra. He explained that somewhere around Suhum, his thoughts became unsettled and uncomfortable, leading him to make a sudden decision to turn back home rather than continue to the capital.
When pressed on whether his unease was linked to a particular individual, he admitted there was someone involved but declined to reveal the person’s identity.
“Because of the rain, I missed my flight, so I decided to drive instead. However, when I got to Suhum, all I could think about was beating someone, so I turned back and returned home. If I had gone to the event, I honestly believe I would have ended up beating someone,” Lilwin stated.
Despite the absence, he still walked away with Best Actor in a Leading Role at the ceremony held at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel. He described the honour as potentially his final award, indicating he no longer has interest in collecting industry recognitions.
He added that future accolades should be directed toward younger actors who are still building their careers, arguing that his work has already achieved widespread recognition beyond Ghana.
