Asamoah Gyan Slams Ghana’s 2026 World Cup Exit After Colombia Defeat, Cites Lack of Urgency and Attacking Bite

Asamoah Gyan

Asamoah Gyan has offered a blunt post-match verdict on Ghana’s 1-0 loss to Colombia, saying the Black Stars fell short of the intensity and attacking edge required on the World Cup stage and acknowledging that the South Americans controlled the key moments of the contest.

Ghana’s tournament run ended after Colombia struck in the first half and held on to that narrow advantage, a result that confirmed the Black Stars’ elimination and capped a frustrating outing in front of goal.

Speaking after the match, the former captain and Ghana’s record scorer pointed to a lack of urgency and conviction in the team’s overall approach, suggesting they never quite imposed themselves when it mattered most.

“Today’s performance was below average, no sense of urgency.”

Beyond the general tempo of play, Gyan raised concerns about Ghana’s presence in advanced areas, particularly the limited numbers committed inside the box as the team chased the game.

“We (Ghana) did not have men in the box.”

He also drew a clear contrast between both sides in terms of intent, arguing that Colombia continued to play on the front foot even after going ahead rather than retreating into a defensive shell.

“Colombia were ahead but kept fighting to score more.”

For Gyan, that difference in mentality ultimately shaped the outcome, with Colombia appearing more decisive and proactive across the decisive phases of the match.

“To summarise everything, Colombia deserved the win.”

His comments feed into a wider wave of post-match reflection following Ghana’s exit, as scrutiny grows over the team’s attacking output despite signs of greater structure and organisation under head coach Carlos Queiroz.

While the defensive shape has shown periods of stability, the lack of cutting edge in the final third has become a recurring talking point among observers assessing Ghana’s campaign.

The defeat officially ends Ghana’s World Cup journey, leaving the technical team to reassess key tactical issues as attention shifts toward rebuilding and preparing for upcoming international assignments under the experienced Portuguese manager.
