The Moment Senaya Came Off, We Lost Our Discipline and Organisation – Queiroz on Ghana’s Defeat to Colombia

New Black Stars of Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz

Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup journey came to a disappointing end after a narrow 1-0 loss to Colombia, with Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz pointing to Marvin Senaya‘s early injury as the turning point in the contest.

The Black Stars saw their hopes of reaching the Round of 16 disappear on Friday night after Colombian midfielder Jhon Arias struck early to hand the South Americans a place in the next round.

Reflecting on the result, Queiroz said the game changed the moment Senaya was forced off through injury, insisting the disruption affected Ghana’s defensive organisation at a critical stage.

“The moment Senaya came off, the team did not have the same discipline and organisation. It took Alidu Seidu a few minutes to adjust, and they took advantage of that moment to score,” the Ghana coach stated.

Senaya picked up an injury in the opening stages of the first half and was replaced by Alidu Seidu. Colombia quickly made the most of the defensive reshuffle, with Arias completing a move that produced what proved to be the decisive goal.

According to the Portuguese coach, the unplanned substitution unsettled Ghana’s backline and handed Colombia the opening they needed to take control of the match.

Although the Black Stars pushed for a response after falling behind, they found it difficult to create meaningful chances against a well-organised Colombian defence. Colombia managed the game effectively, limiting Ghana’s attacking threat while protecting their slender advantage until the final whistle.

The victory sent Colombia into the Round of 16, while Ghana exited the competition after advancing from the group stage as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Carlos Queiroz and his players had gone into the fixture determined to keep Ghana’s World Cup campaign alive, but the early setback proved costly as the four-time African champions were unable to produce the equaliser they desperately needed.

With their World Cup adventure now over, attention is expected to turn to Ghana’s upcoming international fixtures as the technical team begins planning the next stage of the Black Stars’ development.
