Sefa Reveals How D-Black’s Instagram DM Changed Her Music Career

Ghanaian singer Sefa has revealed that a simple Instagram direct message from rapper and entrepreneur D-Black became the unexpected opening that set her on the path to a professional music career.

At the time, Sefa was still in school and had no idea that a message sitting in her Instagram inbox would soon introduce her to the music industry.

Speaking on a cooking show on UTV on August 16, 2026, the singer said she initially doubted whether the account that had contacted her actually belonged to D-Black.

She decided to seek confirmation from her lecturer, who checked the account and established that it was the rapper’s verified profile.

“I was having lectures in school. I realized I had a DM on Instagram from D-Black. I showed the message to my madam that I got a message, but she should confirm if it’s really D-Black. When she checked, she said it’s him and it’s a verified account,” she said.

Sefa said D-Black explained that he had seen a video of her singing and was impressed enough by what he heard to consider her for a new record label he was preparing to launch with music producer DJ Breezy.

“I opened the message and D-Black said he saw a video of me singing. He and DJ Breezy want to start a record label, so I should let him know if I’m interested in joining,” she stated.

Faced with an opportunity she had not anticipated, Sefa turned to her mother for advice before responding.

Her mother encouraged her to take the chance rather than dismiss an opportunity that could potentially open doors in the industry.

“I had to discuss it with my mother and she agreed that I should give it a try and let’s see how it would go,” she shared.

That decision eventually took Sefa from the classroom into a professional recording environment.

When she arrived at the studio, she encountered several artistes she had never met before. The unfamiliar setting made her nervous, particularly because she was new to the industry and the only woman among the group.

“I went to the studio and I saw a couple of artistes there. That’s the first time I saw them, so I was so nervous and I was the only woman among them,” she said.

Her first task was to record a song with Ghanaian musician Epixode. Rather than leaving her to navigate the unfamiliar environment alone, Epixode and the other artistes offered their support after recognizing that she was just starting out.

“I was asked to record a song with Epixode and luckily for me, they helped me a lot because they realized I’m new in the industry,” she stated.

The recording session ultimately became more than an introduction to the studio. Sefa’s vocal performance gave the team enough confidence in her ability to pursue music professionally.

According to the singer, the possibility of officially signing her to the label only came up after the team heard her perform.

“After they realized I could sing well, that’s when the signing conversation came in,” she further stated.
