Germany Deepens Ghana Partnership With Climate Security Initiative Across Four Regions

The German Embassy takes climate security discussions to four regions, addressing issues such as illegal mining, migration and coastal erosion.

The German Embassy in Ghana has wrapped up its “Climate Talks 2026” initiative after a series of engagements in four regions grappling with climate-related security challenges.

The project, organised under the theme “Building Climate Security Resilience,” brought together international experts, policymakers, security personnel, researchers, civil society groups and community representatives to examine how environmental changes are affecting livelihoods, migration patterns and security across the country.

Through the regional discussions, participants shared expertise, explored practical responses to climate-related threats and highlighted the importance of involving local communities in developing sustainable solutions. The initiative also sought to strengthen collaboration between residents and security institutions while promoting conflict prevention and resilience in vulnerable areas.

German Ambassador to Ghana, Frederik Landshoeft, described climate resilience as an important component of maintaining peace and security, stressing the need for stronger cooperation between the two countries.

“Germany and Ghana are partners in building a secure and sustainable future. Through the Climate Talks 2026, we have demonstrated that climate resilience is a fundamental pillar of peace and security,” Ambassador Frederik Landshoeft underscored.

“By translating community-led insights into a strategic Policy Brief, we are supporting Ghana’s efforts to turn environmental challenges into opportunities for stability and long-term growth.”

The discussions were held in four locations, with each forum examining a specific challenge confronting communities in the respective regions.

Tamale hosted the opening session, which examined conflicts arising from climate pressures and competition over natural resources. The discussions subsequently moved to Bolgatanga, where participants considered climate-induced migration and the security concerns associated with population movements.

In Kumasi, attention shifted to the connection between climate change and illegal mining, while the concluding engagement in Keta examined coastal erosion and the need for solutions that place affected residents at the centre of decision-making.

Germany used the initiative to reaffirm its commitment to Ghana’s climate objectives through technical assistance, institutional capacity development and partnerships that recognise the country’s priorities and encourage local participation.

The partnership is intended to bridge the gap between scientific research, technical knowledge and the experiences of communities facing environmental pressures. By bringing these different perspectives together, the initiative seeks to support responses that address immediate threats while improving the long-term resilience of affected populations.

Beyond the regional engagements, Climate Talks 2026 was designed to influence national discussions on the relationship between environmental degradation, competition for resources and security threats.

The project also provided an opportunity to improve communication among traditional and community leaders, civil society organisations, government representatives and security agencies, including the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior.

Its outcomes are expected to feed into Ghana’s national policy discussions through a strategic policy brief developed from the community engagements, alongside a national debriefing forum.

These efforts are intended to ensure that climate-related security concerns receive greater attention in the country’s planning and response systems, while encouraging closer coordination between institutions responsible for environmental protection, community development and national security.
