The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra on Friday led an “Environmental Prayer Walk” as part of its campaign against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
The event began with a “Service of Preparation” at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Adabraka, after which priests led parishioners in a walk through the streets to Christ the King Church, according to Graphic Online.
The purpose of the walk was to raise awareness about the destructive impact of galamsey on Ghana’s environment.
The event brought together Catholic worshippers, environmental activists, and members of the public, all united in their call to stop the destruction of water bodies caused by illegal mining.
During the service, Rev. Father Godwin Fiawoyi urged participants to remain steadfast in their advocacy to protect the country’s natural resources and ensure a sustainable future.
He also prayed for divine intervention in the ongoing fight against environmental degradation.
Participants carried placards with messages calling for an immediate end to illegal mining activities, while police were present to ensure the walk remained peaceful.
