Ghana-born Gremio forward Francis Amuzu has dismissed accusations that he only wants to join the Black Stars for the World Cup spotlight, following his recent declaration to play for Ghana.
The 26-year-old, who once turned down a national team call-up in 2022, has now made his intentions clear, saying he is ready to represent his birth country whenever the opportunity comes.
His announcement came just days after Ghana booked a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, prompting some fans to question his motives.
“I was born in Ghana, so I’m happy that they qualified for the World Cup. It’s a wonderful tournament also to play,” said Amuzu. His comment sparked mixed reactions, with critics branding him an “opportunist.”
But Amuzu insists his desire to play for the Black Stars is not tied to timing.
“If it’s for the World Cup, it will be nice,” he reportedly told Asempa FM. “If it’s after the World Cup, it’s also nice, I will be happy. It is a dream for me to play for the national team Ghana.”
He added that earning a call-up depends on performance, not preference. “I know also that I have to perform well to get a call-up. If it [call-up] comes, good. If it doesn’t come, I have to work harder.”
Amuzu, who has represented Belgium at both U-19 and U-21 levels, now looks forward to the chance of making his senior international debut in Ghanaian colors.
