Stop Sexual Advances Toward Female Artistes – Sefa Tells DJs and Presenters

Ghanaian singer Sefa

Ghanaian singer Sefa is urging DJs and radio presenters to separate professional support from personal motives when dealing with female musicians.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on Okay FM, the artiste called on figures within the entertainment space to stop attaching sexual expectations to opportunities offered to women in the industry.

Sefa said she has not personally been placed in such uncomfortable situations, but she knows the problem exists because several women in music have shared similar experiences publicly.

Reflecting on her early days in the industry, she explained that many of the men she worked with saw her more like family, which helped create a respectful environment and shielded her from such advances.

Still, the singer insisted that this does not mean the issue should be dismissed.

Sefa believes progress will depend on a shift in attitude, particularly among men who hold influence in the industry. In her view, female artistes deserve to be treated with respect rather than being approached with ulterior motives.

“When I joined the industry, many people treated me like a sister, so none tried to make sexual advances toward me. I won’t say such things don’t happen because there are other women in the industry who face it. But I believe it’s something we can navigate. Not every woman you meet should be approached with sexual intentions,” Sefa said.

Beyond that concern, the singer also addressed what she sees as a broader imbalance in Ghana’s entertainment landscape.

According to her, the industry often appears male-dominated partly because media outlets and presenters give more visibility to male artistes.

She pointed to a moment in her own career to illustrate the point. When her hit song Echoke gained widespread popularity, she organised a concert at the Ho Sports Stadium in January 2022 and managed to fill the venue.

Despite the scale of the achievement, Sefa said the success did not receive the level of media attention she believes it deserved.

In her view, milestones reached by male musicians tend to dominate headlines, while similar feats by female artistes often pass with far less recognition.
