A Plus Questions Okomfo Anokye Mystery, Says Ghana Is Sitting on Untapped Tourism Gold

Kwame A-Plus

Kwame Asare Obeng, the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central and widely known as A Plus, has argued that Ghana is sitting on untapped cultural and historical wealth that is poorly packaged for tourism.

He believes that with a stronger focus on storytelling, he could even trace answers to long-standing historical mysteries, including the whereabouts of the legendary Okomfo Anokye if he were in charge of the tourism sector.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb’s Elsie Lamar on Talkertainment, he criticised what he sees as Ghana’s weak approach to documenting and promoting its own heritage.

According to him, the country risks losing control of its narrative if it does not take its storytelling seriously, warning that others will eventually define it in their own way.

A Plus also turned attention to tourism development, insisting that almost every part of Ghana holds untapped potential that could be turned into attractions with the right investment and creativity.

He pointed to the three-headed palm tree in the Eastern Region as an example, noting that similar natural formations exist in his constituency and other parts of the country but remain largely ignored.

“I would create a lot of tourism, everything to me has a tourism potential so I will cause people to come and see. When I was younger I went to Boti falls to see the three headed palm tree, there’s one in my village, there’s another one in one of the towns in my constituency. The problem is we are not telling our stories as others have done,” A Plus said.

He further stressed that Ghana must do more to highlight influential historical figures whose stories have not been fully developed for public education and tourism purposes.

Among those he mentioned were Okomfo Anokye and King Aggrey, saying their legacies deserve deeper exploration and clearer documentation.

He questioned key gaps in the known history of Okomfo Anokye, including his origins, family background, and final resting place. While tradition holds that he was born in “Awukugua” before serving in the Ashanti Kingdom, he said many parts of the story remain unclear.

“Okomfo Anokye conjured the golden stool from the sky, who are his family people, from which home, where was he buried, if he was even buried and if he didn’t come back if I were a tourism minister I can tell you where he went to,” A Plus stated.
