Nollywood actress and director Oby Kechere, remembered by many as Ms Koi Koi in the 2002 comedy hit Aki na Ukwa, has died after a prolonged illness.
Her passing was confirmed by the Directors Guild of Nigeria in a statement released on Friday and signed by its National President, Uche Agbo. According to the guild, Kechere died on 27 April.
“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Madam Cecilia Oby Kechere, Vice Chairman of the DGN Abuja Chapter.
“Madam Cecilia was a graduate of Theatre Arts University of Ibadan, a committed professional and a valued member of our guild. Her contributions to the growth and unity of the DGN, particularly within the Abuja Chapter, will never be forgotten,” said Mr Agbo.
A native of Mbaise in Imo State, Kechere began her Nollywood journey in 2001. Her screen debut came with the popular film August Meeting, before she later became widely recognised for her role in Aki na Ukwa.
Over the years, she built a career that stretched beyond acting. Before her death, she worked with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, where she helped champion awareness on the importance and benefits of vaccination.
In a 2022 interview with Punch, the actress argued that success in Nollywood should come from talent and a strong understanding of the craft rather than loyalty to any cabal.
She had also spoken about one of the personal struggles that followed her career, saying many people often failed to separate her identity as an actress from her role as a civil servant.
Kechere’s film credits also include Aki na Ukwa 2, Final Surrender, Women Affair and Circle of Lives, among other productions.
