Sista Afia Reveals Why She Started Working at 15 Despite Growing Up in Wealth

Sista Afia says the drive to earn her own income began long before music made her a household name, revealing that she stepped into the world of work at just 15 despite being raised in a financially stable home.

Speaking during an interview on Angel FM in Kumasi, the Ghanaian singer shared that she was brought up by a single mother who had built considerable wealth through multiple businesses and property investments. Yet, rather than giving her children everything they wanted, her mother chose to instill discipline, self-reliance and a strong work ethic.

According to Sista Afia, she has never relied on a man for financial support and started making her own money while still in her teens. She recalled that her mother’s journey to success shaped the values she passed on to her children, insisting that they learn the importance of hard work instead of growing up dependent on wealth.

The musician explained that although her mother was financially comfortable, she deliberately avoided raising entitled children because she understood the sacrifices and struggles that came before her success. That experience, Sista Afia noted, influenced the resilient mindset her mother worked hard to instill in her.

She said she was taught from an early age to be strong, independent and capable of standing on her own feet. By the age of 15, she had already stopped relying on her mother for money because she was determined to create her own path and earn her own income.

Sista Afia added that working was something she genuinely enjoyed and that she never felt comfortable asking others for financial assistance. Her surroundings also played a role in shaping that attitude.

She recalled that many of the people she spent time with were already working and earning money for themselves. While they were out making purchases with what they earned, she became increasingly motivated to do the same rather than depend on allowances.

Determined to gain financial independence, she eventually decided to look for work and successfully applied for a position as a bar attendant, marking the beginning of her journey toward earning her own living.
