Worlasi Returns to Painting, Says Art Is His Way of Reclaiming His Story

Ghanaian musician Worlasi is stepping back into the world of painting, describing it as a deliberate move to reclaim and shape his own story beyond music.

Before his breakthrough in the music scene, Worlasi trained in visual arts, a background he says is now pulling him back into the studio after years of focus on performing and recording.

Speaking in an interview with Kafui Dey, he framed his return to painting as a matter of ownership over his identity. “If you don’t tell your story yourself, somebody else will tell it for you,” he told Kafui Dey in an interview.

While music brought him public recognition and introduced him to a broader audience, Worlasi says it no longer feels like the only space where he can fully express himself.

He explained that his current artistic direction draws heavily from his personal roots, including his upbringing, family background, cultural influences, and lived experiences.

“I want people to understand exactly who I am,” he stated.

Worlasi also revealed that he has recently acquired a shared studio space with other creatives, where he has been experimenting with new materials and approaches that move beyond conventional canvas work.

For him, painting offers a different emotional language, one that captures feelings and stories that do not always translate into music.

“I’ve never really had the chance to explore that side of myself until now,” Worlasi further stated.
