Ghanaian singer KiDi has reflected on the fear and uncertainty that came with becoming a father while he was still a university student, revealing that the news arrived at a time when he was struggling to find direction in his own life.
He made the revelation on the Konnected Minds Podcast, where he recalled how learning about the pregnancy affected both his education and his outlook on the future.
“I was scared. I was in uni. I was scared. I was shaken,” the 32-year-old artiste revealed.
At the time, KiDi was still working out what kind of musician he wanted to become and was already dealing with academic setbacks, including resit examinations. The prospect of raising a child added another layer of pressure.
“It did affect my education because I had resits. It was a thing that was heavy on my thoughts. I wasn’t even KiDi then. I was trying to figure out what my sound was going to be,” he said.
For the musician, the biggest challenge was trying to understand how he could take responsibility for another life when he was still learning how to navigate his own.
“So how to raise a child? I was still even raising myself. I was still trying to figure out my place in the world. So to come and add another human to that equation was such a scary concept,” he shared.
KiDi, however, said he was able to push through the uncertainty because he knew he could rely on his family. He singled out his mother as a major source of reassurance during what was a difficult period.
“One thing that kept me going was I always find a way. No matter how difficult it was. I knew I had my family. I knew I had those people behind me. My mom was always going to show up for me,” he said.
That backing eventually gave him the motivation to complete his studies and return to the examination room to clear his outstanding papers.
“It helped me to finish my education. I even took some vim to go and write my resits,” he added.
KiDi also revealed that he learned about the pregnancy early on but could not be physically present for the antenatal process because he and the child’s mother were based in different countries.
“I wasn’t able to be there until he was actually born because we were in different countries,” he opened up.
