“We Could Have Solved It Amicably” – Medikal Speaks on Alabaster Box Court Dispute

Medikal

Ghanaian rapper Medikal has opened up about the legal tension tied to his “Alabaster Box” project, saying there were early attempts to settle the matter privately before it reached court.

In a recent interview on Hitz FM, he explained that the dispute is now being handled legally, even though he initially hoped both sides would resolve it without going to trial.

“The issue is still in court, my lawyer reached out to me yesterday concerning the proceeds and everything, but we’re still on it. We could have solved it amicably, I think they couldn’t wait for us to meet and proceeded to court,” he said.

Medikal revealed that communication had already begun through his representatives in the United Kingdom, with arrangements being made for a meeting to address concerns raised by the other party before things escalated.

“I spoke to one of my reps in the UK to talk to them so we scheduled a meeting. They brought other stuff out that we should take down, then the next day, we saw the court thing. It happened so fast and within 48 hours,” he stated.

He noted that despite the intention to talk things through, events moved quickly and ended up in legal action before any meeting could take place.

According to him, his team had already responded to initial demands, including removing the song and accounting for early streaming revenue shortly after its release.

“I wish we could take it out of court, but they’ve already taken legal action. When it happened, they put a statement out that we should delete the bit of the thing we sampled.

“We wanted to talk about it, but we realized they brought the whole thing down, the clauses saying we should take it down, let’s bring the revenue of the streams, how much we’ve made within those 24 hours, that’s why we deleted it because we were honoring their request,” he explained.

The rapper admitted he was saddened by how the situation unfolded, especially given his admiration for those involved.

“It’s sad because these are father figures. I used to listen to them on my way to school every morning on the radio,” he said.

He also issued an apology, stressing that there was never any intention to disrespect or undermine anyone’s creative work.

“I apologize if they feel like I disrespected them by not reaching out before doing a project like that. sometimes, when you’re in the studio, certain phrases play in your mind, and you just want to add to your creation with no intention of stealing or discrediting someone’s work,’ he noted.

Medikal concluded by reaffirming his respect for the original creators and expressed regret that the disagreement escalated instead of being settled privately.

“If for anything, I actually appreciate them, so I wish things didn’t get to where they are now,” the Ghanaian rapper further stated.
