A fan’s request for a selfie at the scene of a serious road accident has left Sarkodie reflecting on how celebrity status can sometimes overshadow a person’s humanity.
The award-winning Ghanaian rapper recounted the experience in a video shared on social media, recalling how a trip from Kumasi to highlife legend Amakye Dede’s residence in Agogo took a frightening turn when their vehicle was involved in a head-on collision.
Sarkodie said the impact sent their car off the road into a nearby bush. Amakye Dede was seated in the front passenger seat, while the rapper occupied the back alongside the driver and his cameraman.
The group was travelling in a convoy, but the other vehicles had fallen behind when the accident happened. This left the four occupants at the scene as passersby and other motorists stopped to see what had happened.
Amid the confusion, Sarkodie encountered a woman whose reaction caught him off guard. Instead of asking about his condition following the crash, she approached him with a request for a photograph.
“People saw the accident, but they didn’t know it was us. One girl came down from the bus and said to me, ‘Where else will I meet you again? Let me take a selfie with you.’ She didn’t ask how I was doing,” he revealed.
The encounter prompted Sarkodie to question how some people perceive celebrities, arguing that public recognition can sometimes take precedence over concern for the individual behind the fame.
The woman’s response made Sarkodie realise that his celebrity status mattered more to her than his well-being at a time when he could have been injured.
“That’s why I am saying they don’t see a human; they see Sarkodie. She had not even realised that I was hurt; that is not what was important to her,” the 41-year-old rapper further stated.
Sarkodie narrated the incident in the video below.
