Malian Opposition Leader Soumaila Cissé Dies From COVID-19

The main Malian opposition leader, Soumaila Cissé has died from COVID-19.

Information available to First News has it that Soumaila Cissé died at the age of 71 in France whiles receiving treatment for the disease.

He was kidnapped in March 2020 by jihadist militants whiles whiles campaigning in North Eastern Timbuktu Region . He was released about two months ago.

Mr. Cissé was freed alongside a Frenchwoman Sophie Pétronin and two Italian nationals.

Cissé has over the years lost three presidential elections in Mali.

The late opposition leader is an Engineer and IT studied in Senegal and France.  He worked with IBM and major companies before moving to Mali to start politics.
