Akua Donkor’s Ghana Freedom Party endorses NDC and John Mahama ahead of December 7 Elections

The National Executives of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) have declared their unwavering support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, as Ghana approaches its December 7, 2024, general elections.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, GFP Deputy General Secretary Jerry Offei Addo revealed that the decision was unanimous, driven by the alignment of the NDC’s core campaign promises with the GFP’s priorities. Among these shared goals are the creation of a Women’s Development Bank, free tertiary education for able-bodied citizens, and the establishment of a 24-hour economy — initiatives that resonate with the GFP’s focus on women’s empowerment and support for the underprivileged.

Flanked by the party’s acting National Chairman, National Organizer, and National Youth Organizer, Offei Addo debunked rumors that the endorsement was coerced or contradicted the vision of the late Akua Donkor, GFP’s founder and former flagbearer. While Donkor had been critical of Mahama in the past, Offei Addo emphasized that the decision represents a broader commitment to Ghana’s progress and the GFP’s guiding principles.

In response to claims of possible inducements by the NDC, Offei Addo categorically denied any external influence. “Our decision is rooted in what is best for the nation and our supporters,” he stated, adding that GFP members are already rallying voters for the NDC.

This strategic endorsement provides a notable boost for the NDC, coming just days after similar backing from the People’s National Convention (PNC), as the race for the presidency intensifies.
